Zack and Miri Make a Porno

I've been inspired to want to go to lots of movies merely because of the trailer. Sometimes that didn't turn out so well, for instance Wild Wild West and The Matrix Reloaded -- both of which should have stopped with the trailer while they were ahead.

However, I can't remember the last time, assuming it's ever happened at all, that the trailer made me want to go see a comedy, but now it has, and I do: Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Which is kind of strange, since I haven't been inspired to see anything Kevin Smith has directed since Clerks came out. I think maybe the difference here is that it looks like, maybe for the first time since then, he's not trying to tell a story so much as he's merely trying to write a funny movie. It looks like he's succeeded:

This one actually had me laughing out loud, and tonight was the third time I've watched it; that's never a bad sign. The one I've embedded isn't the red band trailer, which also has some swearing, but it does show some different scenes, including a slightly longer edit of the porno being filmed near the end.

It also spends a little longer detailing the friendship between Elizabeth Banks' and Seth Rogen's characters, making it plain and believable in 60 seconds that they've been friends forever (even though Banks is 8 years older than Rogen, and their characters went to high school together).

It's hard to give any better praise to a trailer than to say it's made me want to see a movie I previously had no interest in watching. Plus, I haven't gone to see a comedy in theaters in a long time; it's probably been longer than that since I've seen one that was actually funny.

Trivia: Kevin Smith cast 2 adult actresses in the film: Traci Lords, who can act; and Katie Morgan, who's actually pretty funny. I've never seen any of Morgan's films, and I could go to jail for admitting having seen Lords', so we'll leave it at that.
